Information for Local Authorities
Last updated: 28 May 2025
The Piercing Standards Agency (PSA) exists to support — not replace — local licensing authorities. While every studio must comply with its council’s specific requirements, many teams lack piercing-specific guidance. That’s where we come in.
Our Role
-
Complement Local Registration
PSA codes are not legally binding, but they align closely with best practice across the UK. Studios referencing the PSA are expected to meet or exceed local expectations. -
Support Environmental Health Officers (EHOs)
We provide neutral, practical guidance for officers inspecting studios. Our materials can help identify clear red flags, understand studio practices, and speak with confidence on industry norms. -
Promote Consistency
Regulations vary from council to council. PSA helps provide a consistent national benchmark so that studios — and inspectors — can work from the same expectations. -
Respond to Concerns
If a studio references PSA but falls short, we’ll review it. We can remove references, update our records, and support councils looking to resolve concerns.
How We Help
- Free access to our Codes of Practice
- Consumer-friendly Complaint Guidance
- Clear definitions of studio responsibilities
- A point of contact for EHOs with piercing-specific questions
